DAKU

Country:

DAKU (Hindi for “bandit”) is India’s most famous anonymous street artist, notorious for his stenciling and text based works around Mumbai and his most recent text and light based installations: Time Changes Everything. In these new works Daku explores the physical evolution of form and substance by, rather than permanently painting words on a building as per his usual practice, choosing to project a series of time-sensitive words (“Past, Present, Future, Memory, Identity…”) across the façade of a white walled structure using cutout templates  or positioned across the street. In this new series of work, the sun itself is the creative medium, naturally animating the poetic artistic statement that physically evolves throughout the day as the sun passes overhead.

Through his work, Daku talks about the temporary nature of our contemporary living, time, the art market and society at large. Always experimenting with different mediums and languages - English, Hindi, Urdu, he is able to establish profound and site-specific dialogues with the spaces he works within. His works have been showcased at venues such as the Centre Pompidou, Venice Biennale, Triennale Design Museum, Sikka Art Fair and India Art Fair amongst others.
